1930s Movie Cocktails

Movie Cocktails of the 1930s

The black and white movies of the 1930s always appeared to be so glamorous. The movie stars were always seen drinking champagne and cocktails and smoking as though it was the most elegant thing in the world.

Smoking and drinking weren't taboo in the thirties and it showed in these movies. The women could be seen with long cigarette holders, smoking almost seductively while drinking copious amounts and they even wore real fur coats!

It was definitely a different time.

Martinis were certainly the cocktail of the 1930s if the movies are anything to go by as a number of them showed people sipping dry martinis.

Let's take a drunken walk down the red carpet and look at the cocktails in the movies.

The 1930s opened with the Mae West movie Every Day's a Holiday. In this classic movie we see Mae West and the others drink Bellinis. The movie also introduced the infamous one liner, you should get out of those wet clothes and into a Dry Martini
Bellini Recipe
The Bellini is a champagne cocktail made with -
2 oz peach juice or peach puree
4 oz champagne
Pour the peach juice or puree into the bottom of a champagne flute and then add the champagne slowly.

Moving forward to 1934 we have the movie The Thin Man. In this movie not only do Dry Gin Martinis feature, but we also get lessons in how to shake a cocktail properly. According to William Powell the art of shaking is all about the rhythm -

He continued with -
Now a Manhattan you always shake to fox-trot time, a Bronx to two-step time, a dry martini you always shake to waltz time.
Dry Gin Martini Recipe
Now Martinis can be shaken or stirred, but in the movies they seem to be shaken more and with advice on the rhythm you can rest assured these were definitely being shaken!
3 shots gin
dash dry vermouth
dash of orange bitters (optional)

Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake 'to waltz time, of course' and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an olive.
The following year - 1935, we see Clark Gable and Constance Bennet also indulging in Dry Martinis in the movie After Office Hours and in 1936 William Powell plays a butler who helps himself to Martinis in My Man Godfrey.
In My Man Godfrey, however William Powell indulges in Vodka Martinis which really bucks the trend of gin martinis at that particular time in history.
Vodka Martini
6 parts vodka
¼ tsp dry vermouth
Combine vodka and vermouth into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass to serve and garnish with an olive.
1935 sees Constance Cummings and Robert Young as a young couple in the movie Remember Last Night. After an alcohol fuelled night of partying it appears that the host has been murdered, but everyone drank too much to remember what happened!! Aside from sipping champagne through straws, knocking back the scotch and sodas and swilling down wine the cast also enjoyed Sidecars.
Sidecar
4 parts brandy
2 parts triple sec
2 parts fresh lemon juice
Place all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, with ice and shake well then strain into a cocktail glass.
Also in 1935 we see a Horse's Neck ordered in the film Top Hat starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Horse's Neck
4 parts whisky
ginger ale
3 dashes angostura bitters
Fill a Collins glass with ice and add the whiskey. Fill with ginger ale, the angostura bitters and stir well.
Moving towards the end of the decade we see Bette Davis drinking Pink Gin in the 1939 movie Dark Victory.
Pink Gin
2 shots gin
3 dashes of angostura bitters
Splash the bitters into a chilled cocktail glass, swirl and then pour out the excess. Pour in chilled gin.

In another 1939 film - Remember? - Greer Garson, Lew Ayres and Robert Taylor all quaff Imperials
Imperials
4 parts gin
2 parts dry vermouth
½ tsp maraschino liqueur
2 dashes angostura bitters.
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Strain into a cocktail glass to serve.
Let me know if you enjoyed the lens or perhaps you can think of other movies that I have missed.

Champagne Cocktails

Champagne

Delicious Champagne Cocktails for any occasion.
Champagne is the name given to the bubbly white wine from the Champagne region of France. Moet & Chandon, Dom Perignon and Bollinger are famous brands that are known the world over. Champagne first found favor with the French Royal family which is where it became associated with being an upper class drink.

During the 1920s the Champagne Cocktail was found to be extremely popular amongst the 'Flapper set' which added to the allure of bubbles. In more recent times it was a popular drink for Patsy and Eddie on Absolutely Fabulous!

When it comes to Champagne cocktails I substitute any nice tasting sparkling white wine. The rule of thumb for me is if I would drink it on it's own then I'll use it in a cocktail, if I wouldn't drink the champagne then it will not be going into a cocktail!

The Classic Champagne Cocktails

The original Champagne Cocktail is a true cocktail classic, it was originally served in champagne cups something which is rarely seen now. Serving a Champagne Cocktail in a champagne flute is a much better experience as the shape of the flute captures the bubbles perfectly.

Another classic Champagne cocktail is the Mimosa or Bucks Fizz depending on where you live in the world. I usually serve Bucks Fizz in a pitcher as its great for a girls day out or a brunch where you don't want to be always mixing new drinks

Champagne Cocktail

1 sugar cube
angostura bitters
chilled champagne
lemon twist

Place the sugar cube in the bottom of a champagne flute and put a few dashes of angostura bitters onto it. Next fill with champagne, stir and garnish with the lemon twist.

Bucks Fizz

3 parts Champagne
2 parts Orange Juice

Place 2 cups of Orange Juice in a pitcher and top up with 3 cups of Champagne, a quick stir and then pour into Champagne flutes to serve.

Romantic Champagne Cocktails

If you're feeling romantic and want to impress someone special on one of your first dates, their birthday or even Valentines Day then try a Cupid's Bow, Flirtini or an Axis Kiss.

Cupid's Bow

5 oz Champagne
½ oz cherry liqueur

Pour the cherry liqueur into a Champagne flute and fill with chilled Champagne.

Flirtini

1 shot vodka
¾ shot triple sec
2 shots pineapple juice
champagne

Put the vodka, triple sec and pineapple juice into a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and top up with champagne.

Axis Kiss

1 dash amaretto
1 dash creme de cassis
Champagne

Pour both the amaretto and crème de cassis into a Champagne flute and then top up with chilled Champagne.

Even More Champagne Cocktails

For more delightful Champagne cocktails you simply must try the Sparkling Cosmo, a cosmopolitan with bubbles! The Pink Slipper and Champagne Cooler are other delightful Champagne cocktails to try.

Sparkling Cosmo

1 ½ shots citron vodka
½ shot triple sec
1 shot cranberry juice
I dash fresh lime juice
Champagne

Place the vodka, triple sec and juices into a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a champagne flute and top up with chilled champagne.

Pink Slipper

1 part cointreau
1 part bacardi
3 parts champagne
4 strawberries

Blend together the cointreau, bacardi, strawberries, pour into a Champagne flute and top with Champagne while giving it a gentle stir.

Vampire Cocktails

Well October is here which means it's time for Halloween drinks to make an entrance again  {{cue spooky music}} today I'm going to look at Vampire Cocktails.   Talking of vampires - what blood group are you?   I'm B positive and if you are too you'll probably enjoy the sweet tasting cocktail known as Vampire's Delight!

Vampire's Delight

2 oz dark rum
1 banana
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
grenadine

First you need to add the rum, banana and ice cream into a blender and blend together.   Now take a couple of Champagne flutes and add a little grenadine into each one - swirl it around so that it coats the inside of the glass and then pour in the banana mixture.

Delicious!

I've also discovered a Vampire's Kiss recipe that doesn't seem to be a 'real' vampire cocktail as it contains garlic!   It does however contain the Blavod vodka which is great to make Halloween cocktails with.   The Blavod vodka is a black vodka and is great for making Halloween style Screwdrivers and other spooky looking cocktails.

Back to the Vampire's Kiss cocktail -

Isn't it a cool idea to be able to buy your Vampire cocktail recipe on a recipe card - no need to try and remember where you came across it before, you merely keep the card in an index box by your bar and you'll be mixing up Vampire Kisses on any day of the year!

Shake the liquid ingredients together in a shaker with ice and then pour over crushed ice that it is a shot glass.

Capucine

1 measure parfait amour
crushed ice

Pack a shot glass with crushed ice and pour the curacao in to the glass. Carefully top the drink up with the parfait amour.
